EHRC conducts labour market intelligence research to better understand workforce trends, emerging challenges and future workforce requirements across Canada’s electricity sector. The findings help support workforce planning, education and training initiatives, industry programs and evidence-based decision-making across the sector.
2027 National Electricity Labour Market Intelligence Study
Providing timely workforce data and insights to support workforce planning, skills development and industry growth across Canada's electricity sector.
About the project
Canada’s electricity sector currently employs more than 112,000 people and is undergoing a period of unprecedented growth and transformation. Electrification, energy transition, infrastructure investment, technological change and increasing demand for skilled workers are reshaping workforce requirements across the country. As employers plan for the future, access to timely and reliable labour market intelligence has become increasingly important to workforce planning and decision-making.
This research is part of Pathways to Power, EHRC’s national initiative focused on strengthening Canada’s electricity workforce and helping employers prepare for future talent needs. Through employer engagement and workforce research, the project will generate timely insights on workforce trends, recruitment and retention challenges, emerging skills requirements and future workforce demand. These findings will help employers, educators, labour organizations and policymakers make evidence-based decisions that support the continued growth and reliability of Canada’s electricity sector.
The 2027 report will be released on Feb. 17 at Illuminate 2027: EHRC’s Annual Conference and Awards of Excellence, in Toronto, ON.

About the employer survey
The employer survey is a core component of EHRC’s 2027 Labour Market Intelligence research project. The survey collects information on workforce size and composition, recruitment and retention challenges, diversity and inclusion, workforce planning, training and development, emerging skills, artificial intelligence and future workforce requirements.
The strength of the research depends on broad employer participation from across the sector. Organizations of all sizes play an important role in ensuring the findings reflect the realities of Canada’s electricity workforce.
Participation is by invitation and is intended for employers operating within Canada’s electricity and renewable energy sector. Survey responses are confidential and findings will be reported only in aggregate form. Individual organizations will not be identified in published results.
Participating organizations help inform workforce planning across the sector, make sure their own experiences are reflected in national research, give governments and educators the evidence to target supports and programs where they are needed most and receive early access to the findings under embargo before public release.

Frequently asked questions
-
Why is EHRC conducting this research?
-
Who should complete the survey?
The survey is intended for employers operating in Canada’s electricity and renewable energy sector, including organizations involved in generation, transmission, distribution, construction, engineering, renewable energy and related industry activities.
-
Why is it important for employers to participate?
The quality of labour market intelligence depends on broad employer participation. By contributing data and insights, organizations help ensure the sector’s workforce realities, challenges and opportunities are accurately reflected in national research. The findings will help support future workforce planning, skills development and talent strategies across the industry. They also give governments the evidence to target workforce supports and help educators and training providers build programs around the skills the sector actually needs.
-
What topics does the survey cover?
The survey examines workforce demographics, recruitment and retention, workforce growth projections, training and development, diversity and inclusion, workforce planning, skills gaps, artificial intelligence, emerging occupations and other labour market trends affecting Canada’s electricity sector.
-
How long will the survey take to complete?
Completion time will vary depending on the size of your organization and the availability of workforce data. Most organizations should expect to spend between 30 and 90 minutes gathering and providing responses.
Participants can save their progress and return to the survey at any time. Organizations are also encouraged to collaborate internally, with multiple team members contributing information to support a complete and accurate response.
-
Can more than one person contribute to our organization's response?
Yes. Many organizations choose to involve representatives from different teams to provide workforce, recruitment, training or operational data. Participants can save their progress and return to the survey as needed, making it easy to gather information from multiple contributors before submitting a final response.
-
When is the survey open?
The survey will be in market starting in August 2026. Employers are encouraged to complete the survey as soon as possible after receiving their invitation to allow sufficient time for follow-up and analysis.
-
Is participation confidential?
Yes. All survey responses will remain confidential. Results will be reported only in aggregate form and no individual organization will be identified in published findings.
-
How will the findings be used?
Survey results will contribute to EHRC’s labour market intelligence research and future industry reports. The findings will help employers, labour organizations, educators, policymakers and other stakeholders better understand workforce needs and emerging trends across Canada’s electricity sector.
-
When will the results be available?
EHRC plans to publicly release the final report on February 17, 2027 at Illuminate 2027.
-
Will participants receive the results?
Yes. Organizations that participate in the research will receive early access to the findings under embargo prior to the public release of the report. This will provide participants with an opportunity to review the latest workforce trends and insights before they are released publicly.
-
I did not receive an invitation. Can my organization participate?
The survey is being conducted through a targeted employer outreach process. Organizations operating within Canada’s electricity and renewable energy sector that are interested in participating are encouraged to contact EHRC to learn more.
