Addressing barriers and building pathways for the future workforce

This year’s event confronted some of the most pressing issues facing Canada’s skilled trades—from barriers to entry and uneven apprenticeship experiences to the need for more inclusive and supportive career pathways. A dynamic panel discussion brought together leaders from utilities, unions and post‑secondary institutions, including Tee Albino (IBEW Local 353), Nathan DeGagne (CUSW), Taryn Noel (EPCOR) and Dave Shorey (Georgian College). Their insights highlighted practical solutions and collaborative approaches emerging across the sector, including new initiatives from EHRC’s Destination Trade program.

Attendees also heard from acclaimed biologist, science journalist, author and TV host Dan Riskin, whose keynote linked the surprising science of swarm intelligence into practical lessons for workplace leadership—demonstrating how teams can collaborate more effectively, respond rapidly and achieve stronger outcomes together.

EHRC extends its sincere thanks to all sponsors, presenters and attendees whose support made this year’s Awards of Excellence possible. EHRC especially recognizes its Platinum Sponsor, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), for its leadership and continued commitment to advancing Canada’s electricity workforce.
