The Great Canadian Electricity Map
Bringing electricity learning to middle school students nation-wide.
Greening a Generation Program: Charting a New Era of Clean Energy Education
EHRC’s Great Canadian Electricity Map introduces youth to the innovative ideas, and people, driving Canada’s sustainable energy future. The map is seven by nine meters in size and rolls out across a gymnasium or equivalent size floor. It comes with teaching resources for teachers and facilitators to help people learn about the electricity sector. The map itself lays out Canada’s vast geography, electricity transmission system and major generating infrastructure in its geographic location across the country. Nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, natural gas and coal generating stations are all covered. There are even battery storage facilities and lithium mines on the map as well.
In the spirit of Reconciliation, the map has incorporated Indigenous treaty territories and language groups to help learners understand the Indigenous communities who are impacted by specific major electricity projects and there is a unit included in the learning materials about this.
How is electricity generated? What is an electron? What are those big transmission lines we see crisscrossing our country-side? How will electrifying Canada help us achieve our climate change objectives? Youth (and young-at-heart adults!) have the opportunity to learn about all of these things and many more as they engage with this wonderful learning resource.
And EHRC wouldn’t be the organization we are without incorporating the HR – the map has over 65 QR codes placed on the map that link to videos of actual people speaking about their roles, and the QR codes are geographically linked to where these individuals work. There are Engineers, technicians, tradespeople and plenty of corporate services professionals speaking about their passion for the industry and why they do what they do every day. From the far north to the east and west coasts and everywhere in-between, there is a role that speaks to most young learners.
For middle-schools looking to book the map for their Grades six to eight students, EHRC recommends booking directly through our partner on this initiative Canadian Geographic Education.
EHRC also retains a copy of the map for industry use. EHRC has already been to several industry events showcasing the maps and several youth events sponsored by industry to facilitate learning experiences by trusted and trained EHRC staff. Learning experiences can be tailored to meet the needs of different groups for different program lengths as needed.
To book the map for your next industry event, please contact us at [email protected].
The project has been funded in part by Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Renewables Electrification Pathways Stream.
