June 22, Ottawa—Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC) continues to ensure Alberta’s electricity sector is future-ready with the launch of its latest resource, the Succession Planning Guidebook. The Succession Planning Guidebook is a practical reference for employers looking to steward organizational knowledge through retirements and role changes.

With an aging workforce and industry in transition, organizations will face retirements and potential sudden departures of key staff in critical positions, which put operations and planning at risk—costing time and financial resources. As a result, succession planning is a critical component of any organization’s resilience strategy by understanding critical competencies in each role to ensure continuity when staff move on, either planned or unexpectedly.

The Succession Planning Guidebook addresses these challenges by providing best practices and process descriptions for key competencies and roles. The guidebook demonstrates how advanced preparation allows for smooth transitions in the case of unexpected vacancies, as well as making the case that succession planning can aid in an organization’s ability to support diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.

“By identifying qualified pools of candidates ready to fill critical positions, organizations will be much better prepared to handle uncertainty,” said Michelle Branigan, CEO of EHRC. “Having already done the legwork around competency requirements, organizations can use their lead time to ensure equitable hiring practices and remove barriers to entry for under-represented groups.”

“Alberta’s economy depends on a ready supply of power, and that relies on organizations being fully staffed and operational. This resource will ensure that every organization that contributes to our electrical grid will be better prepared to mitigate changes in staff, from the board room to the field,” said Jason Copping, Alberta Minister of Labour and Immigration.

The Succession Planning Guidebook was launched online via a webinar event on June 16, 2021 and featured a panel of stakeholders from Alberta’s electricity sector. Find the event recording here.

This project is funded in part by the Government of Alberta.
