my name is Jess pudister I’m the
strategy and engagement manager with

the whole city of ikawuit and all the
communities in innovator run off diesel
powered generators and the carbon
footprint of that diesel that’s burned
for electricity is huge and that doesn’t
include the cost and the carbon
footprint of bringing the diesel into
the territory by tankership which also
has an environmental cost of the
potential for spills
we’re aiming to build wind turbines and
solar arrays and pump storage and hydro
facilities any kind of potential
technology that can harness renewable
energy we’re in the business of making
that happen
I think we have a responsibility to have
the smallest footprint in this beautiful
land as we can so I decided to run my
house on solar the system behind me it’s
a 10 kilowatt solar system and it covers
almost all of my annual power needs
there’s a lot that goes into deal
dependency in the north which is why
working towards energy Independence in
that sense especially when it comes to
Renewables is really nice because
there’s a level of reliability that you
might not have with diesel
I think at the end of the day for me
it’s just knowing that I’m working
towards a renewable future Renewables
are the way of the future and it’s where
we need to go knowing that my nine to
five job actually is contributing to
that is really awesome
building renewable energy systems and
displacing Diesel which is essentially
removing carbon from the atmosphere
that’s what has to happen to slow down
and hopefully halt climate change so
that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing

Society is changing and I think what’s
important for young people to understand
is that Renewable Power is the future I
hope more young nunavumiyu get involved
in renewable energy but I think across
Canada it’s an area where there’s going
to be a lot of opportunity
