Meet the recipients

Mekalah Leach-Rathwell – Trades bursary recipient

Mekalah started her journey in trades in 2018, working in the renewable energy sector building wind turbines across Canada. Her early experience sparked a desire for a hands-on career, leading her to pursue an apprenticeship as a Powerline Technician with the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW). Since then, she has developed a wide range of technical skills and discovered a deep passion for the electrical industry.

“The participation of women in powerline work is important because it shows that this career is not limited by gender and encourages the next generation of women to pursue the trades as a career option.”

She is enthusiastic about the future and eager to apply her knowledge and skills to help build a stronger, more efficient electricity system. This bursary not only supports her educational journey—it also empowers her to mentor and inspire future apprentices pursuing careers in the electrical trades.

“Being able to share my journey with others and how to navigate starting an apprenticeship gives me a sense of purpose, knowing I can help inspire and support the next generation of women entering the electrical industry.”

Selam Demoz – STEM bursary recipient

Selam is a third-year Civil-Environmental Engineering student at the University of Alberta. She currently works as a Student Geotechnical Engineer with the City of Edmonton and as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in a microfibers lab. Passionate about sustainable energy and environmental stewardship, Selam actively supports equity in STEM through research and mentorship.

“As a woman in Civil-Environmental Engineering, I have learned the importance of mentorship, community and having role models who show that there is space for us at every level of the profession.”

Selam drives her passion for sustainability and equity into her engineering work, actively supporting women in STEM through volunteer mentorship programs. She is committed to developing innovative solutions that will help make Canada’s electricity sector cleaner, more inclusive and better equipped to meet future challenges.

“Having more women in engineering is essential for innovation, as it brings diverse perspectives that lead to more impactful and inclusive solutions.”

Building a stronger, more inclusive future

Mekalah and Selam exemplify the passion, resilience and innovation needed to shape the future of Canada’s electricity sector. Their achievements in traditionally male-dominated fields are helping break barriers and inspire greater participation from women across the industry.
