This month I had the opportunity to meet with the CEO of Skills/Compétences Canada, Shaun Thorson.

Shaun’s journey, with over two decades in charge of Skills/Compétences Canada, has been marked by a deep commitment to inspiring and guiding young Canadians to success. The opportunity to inspire young people keeps him motivated and dedicated to developing a skilled workforce to support Canada’s economy.

At the core of Skills/Compétences Canada’s mission lies engaging Canadian youth in career exploration and skills development year-round. Shaun finds immense joy in witnessing the growth of these individuals. “I see them evolve from enthusiastic youngsters to confident adults, poised to make significant contributions to their communities and the country”, he adds.

Under Shaun’s leadership Skills/Compétences Canada has become a beacon of opportunity for tradespeople and technologists. On May 30th Skills/Compétences Canada’s flagship event will be hosted at ExpoCité in Québec City. The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) 2024, focuses on promoting skilled trade and technology careers to Canadian youth. At SCNC, thousands of students visit the competition floor and discover the exciting and rewarding careers that are available in the skilled trades and technologies through over 50 interactive Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities, by visiting exhibitor booths, and engaging with industry professionals.

SCNC is also the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Each year, more than 500 of Canada’s best in skilled trades and technologies come to SCNC to compete in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions over a two-day period.

Shaun understands that success in trades and technology goes beyond technical skills alone. He emphasizes the importance of non-technical skills like communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability saying, “these skills, coupled with curiosity and a willingness to learn, form the foundation for a successful career in any field.”

In his free time, he is an avid squash player and cyclist, always seeking new challenges. Shaun’s diverse interests reflect his drive to excel in every endeavor -including a trade or two! He channels his passion for craftsmanship into renovation projects, honing his skills in woodworking and DIY projects.

Looking to the future, Shaun is excited about the prospects of hosting the WorldSkills Competition in Toronto in 2028. Canada is currently in the bid process for this prestigious event. With close to 2,000 competitors from around the globe, the event promises to be a celebration of skill and talent on an unprecedented scale. He adds “I am determined to showcase Canada’s capabilities and provide a transformative experience for participants and spectators alike.”

As Shaun continues to lead Skills/Compétences Canada with unwavering dedication, his vision for a brighter future driven by skilled youth remains steadfast. His journey is dedicated to empowering individuals to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
