Last week, the federal government announced a $15.8 million investment to create jobs and training opportunities for youth in the green economy as part of the federal COVID relief response. Electricity Human Resources Canada is proud to be a delivery partner in this initiative supporting jobs for Canada’s youth.

This funding extends EHRC’s successful Green Jobs program, which subsidizes placements and training for youth in STEM and/or natural resources and environmental positions. With this addition funding, we have 51 new placements to fill, all subsidized by 75% up to a maximum of $22,500 or $30,000, depending on placement location and/or if the participant is indigenous or a person with a disability.

So what is a green gob? For the purposes of this program, a green job is linked to the green economy in one of two ways:

  1. Positions that require environmental skills, knowledge, experience or competencies in order to produce environmentally beneficial products or services (e.g. land use planning, air quality engineers).
  2. Positions that may not require specialized environmental skills but result in an environmental benefit (e.g. trades or manufacturing related to renewable energy generation).

Youth who participate in this program not only have the chance to develop their technical and professional knowledge, but also to kick-start their careers with relevant, on-the-job experience in innovative and forward-thinking sectors.

As we take cautious steps to reopen workplaces across Canada, employing youth is important for ensuring a resilient and sustainable economic recovery.
